Welcome to Lakeland Schools

Special Education/PPS

Welcome to the Department of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services. We work continually throughout the year to meet the needs of students identified with an educational disability and supported through an Individual Education Plan.  Students requiring a Section 504 Plan are also supported through PPS.

Joe Spatola, Assistant Superintendent of Pupil Personnel Services.

Support is provided for eligible students grades kindergarten through high school graduation or the year in which a student turns 21. We work with the Counties of Westchester and Putnam Departments of Health to support programs and services for children ages three through five identified as requiring special education services. A full continuum of support and services are provided for the vast majority of our resident students, K -12, within district programs. A small number require more intensive support than can be provided in district schools and we work with parents in identifying the most appropriate program.

The Committee on Special Education (CSE) or the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) meets at least annually to review a student’s progress, establish goals for the following school year and recommend appropriate programs and services to meet those goals.

We are committed to education in the least restrictive environment and provide the necessary supports for students to be successful. We work closely with the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and all building administrators to ensure that students with disabilities remain integral members of the educational community, participating in rigorous yet appropriate educational programs culminating in a high school diploma.
