PBIS-Parent and Student Letter

Dear Parents and Students,

Van Cortlandtville Elementary School maintains the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (P.B.I.S.) program to further support our Character Education program.  We will continue to highlight and celebrate positive behavior through our reward systems.  P.B.I.S. also supplies students with skills to handle potentially negative situations and think about the best course of action.

Having a school-wide behavioral approach incorporates everyone.  Students are able to see that we all support them and equally contribute to our school’s success and safety.  The students, along with their teachers, have designed an expectation grid for the gym, during lunch and recess, on the bus, in the classroom, and in the hallway.  These expectations are posted in the specific areas.

Van Cortlandtville has adopted the acronym R.O.C.K.S. (Respectful, Organized, Cooperative, Kindness and Safety).  When you exhibit a positive desired behavior, we will reward you with a ROCKS ticket.  Forty tickets will result in you getting your name card on our ROCK wall.  Eighty earns you a White Ribbon.  One hundred twenty will earn you a Yellow Ribbon, and you will be allowed to choose a Tier I award from our list.  One hundred sixty tickets will result in a Blue Ribbon, a shout-out in our monthly recognition,  and you will be allowed to choose either a Tier I or II reward from our list.  Finally, two hundred tickets will result in an Award Certificate and a choice of a Tier I, II or III award from our list.  Students will also get to choose from the menu of rewards for every additional fifty tickets earned.

We will be continuing our Blue & Gold Ribbon Lunchroom Challenge program and our Hallway Challenge.  This year, we are excited to be offering R.O.C.K.S. tickets at our PTA-sponsored events, therefore promoting our collaborative expectations.  Students will have the opportunity to show off their outstanding behavior and citizenship in all extra-curricular activities.

During the month of September, we will kick off our PBIS program with a five week booster activity.  For each of these five weeks, we will review our behavioral expectations daily.  Each week will focus on a different theme (letter of our R.O.C.K.S. acronym).  We will ask students to participate in our “themed Fridays” and wear clothing/accessories to match the theme for that week.  Please visit our school’s website for updated information.  Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Jacqueline M. Woodruff
