Spelling Activities


1-2-3 Go!

1.  Divide the class into two teams.

2.  On board, write Team 1 and Team 2.

3.  One person from each team goes to the board with chalk in hand.

4.  The teacher reads a spelling word. The two students must write that word on the board.

5.  The first person to finish spelling the word first gets a point for their team.

6.  The team with the most points wins.

Air Spelling 

1.     Choose a spelling word.  With their index finger, students spelling the word in the air and say the letters aloud.  Tell the students they must be able to “see” the letters as they are written in the air. 

2.     When the students get to the last letter, they underline the whole word as they say the word aloud.  Ask them if they can “see” the word in the air.

 

All Aboard! 

1. Read a spelling word aloud and have the students write it down. 

2. Using the last letter in that word, students must write another word beginning with that letter.

3. Continue the train using the last letter of the word.

Pretend you are a cheerleader and call out your words!

Sometimes you’ll yell, sometimes you’ll whisper.

Newspaper Spelling

In pairs, or groups, search a newspaper page from top to bottom.

Look for spelling words in the articles.

Circle each word as you find it with a highlighter or crayon.

Make a list of the words found.

Popcorn Sentences

For each spelling word, write a sentence kernel.

(The dog barked.) Then pop it up! 

Add when, where, why, and descriptive words!

(Last night, our black dog barked loudly at the front door when the wind blew fiercely.) 

 

Secret Agent Words

Number the alphabet from 1 to 26.

Change you words to a number code.

Snowman

Draw a snowman with hat and three buttons. Play like hangman, but erase a part of the snowman for each wrong guess.

Rainbow Words

Write your words in three different colors.

Colorful Words

Use two different colors to write your spelling words.  Use onc color for consonants and the other for vowels.

Create task cards for each word

Tic Tac Toe Spelling

Divide class into two teams. Team X and Team O. Draw a large tic-tac-toe grid.  Call on students from one team and have them spell a word. Teams earn 1 point for each correct word.  Team with most points win.
