WISE

W.I.S.E. originated at Woodlands High School
almost 30 years ago.
W.I.S.E. consists of several basic elements including:working and meeting with
a teacher/mentor on a weekly basis, maintaining a written journal on a daily
basis, researching a specific topic, volunteering at a community or professional
organization and organizing a final presentation. Students are evaluated by
a panel consisting of students, teachers, and coordinators.
W.I.S.E. offers graduating seniors an opportunity to explore their community
resources, potential careers, or personal interests prior to attending college.
The final presentation, journal, and other requirements provide an outstanding
preparation for college-level studies.
The Walter Panas Individualized Senior Experience is a program that permits
students to design and implement their own self-directed internships or projects
during their senior year. Social Studies and English credits are awarded to
seniors completing the program. Complete Course Outline

Internships begin at the beginning of the 2nd Semester or 3rd Quarter. Many students find their own locations for their internships while otherswill use contacts already established by the WISE program. Students must spend 8-10 hours per week at their internships. Students find it easier if they a have a car for transportation. Many students still find it possible to return to the school for extracurricular activities.

Because the WISE Program substitutes for the normal 12th grade Politics class, it is one of the major topics that we discuss. Typical discussions include the election process, political parties, current events, as well as many of the important political issues. Each Friday students will be required to turn in a current events article summary and reaction. They will be expected to be able to discuss their summary and reaction with the class. The WISE Program also substitutes for the normal 12th grade Economics class. Therefore quite a bit of introductory economics is covered throughout the year. Topics range from supply, demand, money, the stock market, and personal budgets. During the first quarter, each student will be required to complete a Personal Budget Project. During the second quarter, each student is required to complete a Stock Market Project.
