Prisoners from the Front

Return to the Winslow Homer Page

WAR
TORE THE PRAIRIE AND THE SWORDS
LAID IN THE GREEN FIELDS
WHILE THE YOUNG TURNED TOO OLD
AND BOYS BECAME MEN.

THE HORSES THEY RODE WERE WHITE AS SNOW
AND THEIR GUNS POLISHED LIKE A BOOT.
THEIR FACE DIRTIED WITH GUN POWDER
AND DIRT.
THEIR HANDS COVERED
WITH BLOOD NOT OF THEIR OWN
WAR.

Painted in 1866: oil painting on canvas.
I learned that Winslow Homer was a great artist and his paintings are very inspiring.
Art just brings the words out of you.
