The Fog Warning

Back to Winslow Homer Page

He caste his line with two worms this time
As it hit the water something jumped up as it bit the line
He could tell it was big as it almost ripped him from the boat
He reeled it in as the storm was brewing heavily
The boat was rocking and made it a struggle to balance
He finally got the fish in and knew it would sell quickly at the market
It was a tuna and he was so excited though light was diminishing
As he made it back to land the water became worse and worse
Boom! The boat was cracked right down the middle as water rushed in
As the boat begin to sink the fish floated away
He burst into tears as the waves rushed over him
He didn't even yell for help.

This painting was published in 1885 and is of a fisherman who caught a large halibut. It is a 30 X 48 inch oil on canvas painting located in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. I chose this painting because it seems like the man is going to get stuck in the storm and there must be a lot of thoughts going through his mind along with the fact that it reminded me of one of Ernest Hemmingway's famous books The Old Man and the Sea.

I didn't learn anything from the lecture because the lady was extremely boring but I guess if you're interested in those kind of useless things then it would be interesting. The thing that caught my eye about this painting was the rocky water and the enormous fish in his boat. Some people like to look into paintings very deeply and try to see what the artist was trying to explain with the way he painted the piece of work.

The connection between art and poetry are alike because art can have several meanings just like words. It's the way you look at them. They can also be different because a work of art can have many more meanings than a poem because words are more structured than art work. Our quote :Like the brushstrokes of an artist, the writer uses words to create meaning, means that artwork and poems are alike in the way that the way the colors are put together is the same way words are put together in a poem.
