The Salem Witch Trials occurred in the 1600s
and is the basis for Arthur Miller's The Crucible.
By the end of the trials (1692)19 "witches" had
been hanged. One "wizard" had
been pressed to death, and as many as 13 others had died in prison.
Since then the stories of the Salem Witch Trials
have been the source of plays, books, and movies. Through the horror
of it all many seem
to forget the people who lost their lives to the suspicions and
lies of their fellow townspeople. These were real people, with
real lives.
Many had children, went to church and lived moral lives.
 In Salem,
Massachussets they have erected the Salem Witch Trials
Memorial adjacent to the Charter Street Old Burying Point, where
many of the hanged were buried, in memory to those who lost
their
lives.
In this webquest, you will conduct
research to learn more about the real victims of the Salem Witch
Trials.
Everyone will
be assigned one of the following victims to research(Bridget
Bishop, Rebecca Nurse, John Proctor, Giles Corey, Tituba) You
will have to do the following:
- Prepare a handout with biographical information about this person
- Prepare a quiz to
distribute to the rest of the class
- Prepare a
quiz answer key
- Prepare
for your short presentation
- First you
will choose the name
of the victim you will be researching. See Ms. Oliva to pick
the name.
2. Second, you
will
watch the video clips
on the Salem Witch Trials and
complete the video clip worksheet. Pay careful attention to the videos
to see if
you can find out information about your victim.
Directions
to watch video clips: Open MS Word and click on Share folder.
Click on the Ms.Oliva folder and then click on Salem Witch
Trials 0708. ENJOY :)
3. Third, you
will use the links on the RESOURCE page to find information specific
to your victim, which will help you create your handout. Remember
to print pages or record information to help you with citations.
4. Fourth, you will
create your handout. You can do so using the template provided
for you on Microsoft Word
or
if you are familiar with Microsoft Publisher, you can use this program
also. *At the bottom or top of your handout you MUST give credit
to the sites you used for your infomation.
5. Fifth, you will
create your quiz. You can do this in any format you choose, but you
must have a minimum of 5 questions and a maximum of 10 questions.
You must be able to find the answers in your handout.
6. Sixth, you will
create an answer key to go with your quiz.
7. Finally, you will
prepare for your short presentation. Presentation should be between
7-10 minutes in length. You will explain what you learned about your
victim by going over the handout, and then hand out your quiz. Then
you will go over the answers.

Use the following links
to find information about your victim. It is your job to determine
which sites will be most helpful for you.
