Lakeland-Panas Girls 4 Mile Relay Team Earns All America Honors; Two From District Win State Titles

The Lakeland-Panas Girls 4 Mile Relay Team of Carolina Casin-Silva, Meagan Hopkins, Heidi Weinborg, Sarah Biggers and alternate Valeria Calvo became the first Lakeland-Panas athletes ever to earn All America honors by finishing 6th at the National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships. Competing this past Saturday at the New Balance Track & Field Center in New York City against athletes from across the country, the relay team members each ran one mile turning in an impressive school record performance of 22:26 to earn the national honors.

Earlier this month, Lakeland/Panas' Brie Roller won the 600 meter race and Carissa Leonardi captured the pole vault in the New York State Track Championships at Cornell University. Brie needed 1 minute, 35.75 seconds to win the 600-meter crown Saturday. Carissa won her event with a 12-foot vault. Also competing in the meet were Jorge Garcia(LHS) and Andrew Federowitz (WPHS).

Jorge Garcia placed 2nd as part of the Intersectional medley relay during the state track meet. He came from behind and brought his team from 4th place to nearly catching the first place team from Section 3. Andrew Federowicz also placed 14th out of 35 jumpers in the Long Jump.

The season ending performance capped an impressive indoor/winter campaign for the L/P Girls Track & Field Team that included a team league championship and ten league champions.
