2016-2017 Kindergarten Supply List

Come and visit us at our Open House- March 14, 2017.  It is a great night for your child to show you their work and their classroom.  Hope to see you there!

Here is what the kindergarteners will be doing over the next month!

We will continue to focus on the following skills during our Shared Reading experiences over the next month:

  • Making text-to-self connections
  • Making text-to-text connections
  • Sequencing the story
  • Looking at literary elements- characters and setting
  • Discussing problem and solution

Writing is going well.  The students are writing and they are wonderful authors.  We are focusing on nonfiction writing and adding details to our pictures.  We are also working on adding more than one sentence and trying to distinguish between a question versus a statement.

Some literacy skills we continue to focus on during our Literacy Block include:

  • Tapping sounds in words
  • Matching picture with text
  • Looking at beginning and ending sounds of words
  • Using our reading finger
  • Rhyming

The children have book baggies or book folders with just right books, which they read each day.  The students are increasing their fluency with these books.

We have been working on word wall words.  Please keep a lookout for the following words when you are reading with your child at home:  me, I, am, my, the, can, a, see, is,  do, to, at, up, we, go, and, like, went, he, she, it, in, had, has, look, on, said, play, of, have, get, did, come, him, and are.

We are working on Unit 3 and 4 of our Fundations Program.  We have begun tapping out the sounds of words and blending.  The children are reading CVC words and they are very proud of themselves.

Social Studies:
We will continue to work on communities and learn about what makes up a community.  We will be discussing the different kinds of buildings that make up a community and learning about community workers.
We continue to work with forces and discover how different magnitudes of force (strength) affect the way things are pushed, pulled, or changed.

We will continue to focus on composing and decomposing numbers to 10 and then moving on to addition and subtraction.

Graphing and calendar patterning continues.  The students will be looking at a new pattern this month. We will continue to use math vocabulary when looking at these calendar pieces.

Thank you for all your support!
