Computer Awareness
Technology
Benchmark III: The student is a builder
of knowledge using technology, media and telecommunications.
- Input
and Output Devices: Use input and output devices to successfully use
modern technologies
- Productivity
Tools: Use a variety of technology resources and applications to facilitate
learning throughout the curriculum and support personal, academic and
professional productivity
Using
the large screen presentation system, gather the students together as
a class or in small groups and discuss the various components of a computer
and the appropriate term for each (monitor, keyboard, printer, disk, mouse,
CD-ROM, hard drive, digital camera, scanner). Click here
for posters to hang in the classroom showing the different parts of the
computer and some other devices.
Demonstrate
the buttons used to turn the computer and monitor on and off. Assign a
"Computer Captain" who will be responsible for turning on the
computer and shutting it down that day. Rotate the job until all students
have a turn.
Using
the keyboard, have each student type his or her name in a preset font
and size. (This can be adjusted to fit the readiness of the student. Some
may be ready for more of a challenge.) Print. Let students draw a self-portrait
underneath and display class results. Take a photo with the digital camera,
print, and compare. Have students write about which image they prefer,
using a template, dictation, or on their own if able.
Using
a program such as Kid Pix, show the class how to use the mouse to manipulate
the program. In small groups or as a center activity, allow students time
to explore the program. Rotate as a center activity.
