Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland in 1820. That was more than 180 years ago.

Harriet Tubman and her family were slaves. Slaves were people who were forced to work hard for other people.

Harriet didn’t like being a slave so she ran away. Then she went back and helped her family and friends run away, too. Harriet helped more than 300 people run away from slavery! She was a hero!
