Third Grade

Third Grade  ~ February 2017 Newsletter 


English Language Arts:  Students continue to develop their skills through careful reading of both literary and informational texts. Students will extend their expertise of learning about culture beyond Japan and begin studying three different countries. Students will build their ability to share learning about these countries through reading and structured book discussions. We will begin the unit by reading a new Magic Tree House book and discover the evidence of culture within that country. Students will read the book in class and at home, sharing and supporting each other through a structured Book Club. Students are also expected to pay attention to key vocabulary and begin a routine to practice reading fluently.

Math:  This month we will be finishing multiplication and division equations and will be working on strategies to multiply with factors of 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. We will study the different properties of multiplication such as commutative, associative, and distributive properties. Please continue to practice all math facts daily. When we have completed that unit we will begin our fractions unit.

Science:  We are finishing up our unit on electricity. Our next unit will be The Water Cycle, studying the different forms that water can take, and how water changes from one form to another. Students will also be learning about how temperature and other weather factors relate to the state of water.

Social Studies: We will be moving into our study of China. We will start by looking at where China is located and the physical features and environment that the country has.
